Santa Sleigh Cake

Christmas birthdays are cool.  You can get creative and make a birthday cake like this!!!!

Desiccated coconut snow, mini favours bags for Santa's sacks, Brightly coloured, foil wrapped assorted toffees from Sainsburys and chocolate coins.

Use the edge of a cookie/pastry cutter to cut holly then squeeze rounded edges to make them pointed.

Cake is three "steps".  Santa is sitting on the second step.

Not just any tube train cake but the Cockfosters tube train!

Happy 3rd birthday to a train obsessed birthday boy!

This couldn't be any tube train but a Cockfosters Tube train.

Not made with a swiss roll cake but a flat cake cut with the biggest round cookie cutter I could find, sliced flat at the bottom so the shapes stand up and stuck together with butter icing.  Whole thing covered with butter icing then covered with coloured ready to roll icing from the supermarket.

When will we be able to buy Wilton colour gels or similar in the supermarket here like they have in the States? By far the best thing Kiddie Cake Maker has found to colour ready to roll icing. Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Morrisons - take notice!

Tip you could try for actually being able to write with the writing icing you buy in the supermarket.... put it in the microwave to 5 secs then another 5 if really needed.  I'm sure this probably goes against any instructions but it worked for me!

Meet Cecil

Cecil the Caterpillar cake.  The request was a caterpillar decorated with lots of sweeties.  Request met.

No need to make a swiss roll.  Make a flat cake and use two different sized cookie cutters to cut the body shape and stick together with butter icing.

Melt and temper chocolate to cover cake.  Loads of good You Tube clips showing how to do this.

Used more chocolate than expected but hey for a first attempt the result was pretty good.

Cockfosters underground train for this weekend!

Its Shaun the Sheep

Happy birthday to a Shaun the Sheep crazy 7 year old.  Great bowling party today and tears because the cake had to be cut up and couldn't be kept forever.  Explanations of mold and talking lots of pictures eventually overcame this.

Shaun the Sheep made with a pyrex bowl and cake pops baking tin plus a little extra cake to make the head from.  Kiddy Cake Maker hands still have the tell tale signs of using lots of black food colouring... even though icing was coloured on Friday!

Cake stuck together with butter icing then covered with white ready to roll icing.

The celebrating nothing special cake

Cake making kicks off again now the school summer holidays are over... but not a cake for a child's birthday.  A cake for a celebrating nothing special party.  A bright cheerful sunflower cake complete with bumble bee and pretty silver ribbon.

Impressively this cake survived the journey from London to the Forest of Dean via deepest, greenest Herefordshire!

Inspiration..... just being happy and cheerful

Barbie princess and a princess Jasmine cake for this weekend.  The Kiddie Cake Makers are busy again after a fabulous summer full of rain and adventure!

Manchester City fan birthday cake

Friday afternoon was an afternoon of pure escapism for the Kiddie Cake Makers getting lost in creating a Manchester City birthday cake.

Mum has seen the cake and very excited to see the face of Manchester City's biggest fan when he sees it.  Kiddie Cake Makers will be there to witness it too.

Wilton's kit for cakes including goals and players sold by Lakeland conveniently include players in Manchester City colours!

Clown cake shocker

The Kiddie Cake Makers first came together making a clown cake for one of their daughter's fifth birthday party.

Inspiration for the cake came from a book with novelty cakes in and the design was adapted a little, giving the clown a bright, colourful bow tie.

Loved the result!

Anyway, the same design appeared in the window of a local cake shop.  The cake was made exactly as the picture in the book but smaller than the one we made - this size of ours was dictated by the size of pyrex bowl we had available!

We had been walking by this window for a few weeks, talking about going in to ask how much they charged for this cake, but not doing it.

Walking past their door together on Saturday one of us went in to ask the question while the other stayed outside with the children..... We were shocked, stunned and amazed.... they were asking £100!  Had no idea children's birthday cakes could cost so much money but then I guess they do have the expenses of keeping the shop on top of making the cake.

Blooming Great Tea Party

Kids cakes went down really well this weekend.  Great feedback from kids and parents.  Their enjoyment always brings a big smile to the faces of the kiddie cake makers.

Extra icing and cup cakes made for Ferrydale Lodge's Blooming Great Tea Party and bazaar to raise money  for Marie Currie Cancer Care today.

Football pitch in Manchester City colours to get ready for next Saturday!

Pretty flower 5 cake

Love this one.  Request was a cake in the shape of a 5 with pretty flowers on.  Thank goodness for flower shape cookie cutters from Lakeland!

Picture doesn't do it much justice.  Looks better "in the flesh" so to speak but the pictures gives an idea.

Barbie Birthday Cake

Barbie cake

Giant cupcake tin came in useful today.  This makes giant cupcakes, bobble hats and..... skirts for Barbie Dolls.  Really pleased with the result.  Small piping nozzle, butter icing and used cookie cutter to imprint semi circles to get the pattern an even size.

I am told there is one very happy five year old looking forward to blowing out the candles on her cake tomorrow!  Happy birthday Ella!

Request for a princess ballerina birthday cake for a six year old girl.

Wilton teddy cake tin was fabulous.  Second time I've used it with good results.  Fabulous results from it when leant it to a friend's mother to create a christening and birthday cake!

Piping took ages but getting better.  Having the right tools helps enormously.  It took ages the first time trying to make piping bags out of grease proof paper - I don't recommend that unless you are well practiced at ti.

Here is the teddy princess ballerina birthday cake
Lots of butter icing, and ready to roll icing used.  Wilton colour gels used to colour all icing.
